MISS MATCHED

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Last month I did a brow study with a blonde model to demonstrate the difference between bare, light and dark brows on a blonde. Today I want to share with you my rule of thumb for brow color: always go darker or match your hair color (and not lighter)! Of course it’s a matter of opinion and you have every right to disagree, but one of my personal pet peeves on the red carpet is when I see someone’s brows lighter than her hair color. For every day, it’s totally fine. But at night when you bump up your makeup and dress up, it’s 1000 times more striking if you at least match your brows to your hair. Here’s a color guide:
  • BLACK HAIR: Try to match them so they look black as well, not brown or red or reddish brown. My favorite brow shadow that I use on Krysten Ritter and Bria Murphy (above) is Damone Roberts Brow Shadow Brow Shadow in Miss Ross. It’s a grey color with absolutely no brown in it that looks gorgeous on African American, Asian and black-haired beauties.
  • DARK BROWN HAIR: Match it. I love Bobbi Brow Dark Brow Kit on my clients Rachel Bilson and Emmy Rossum because you can mix a grey shade with a brown shade so it keeps it from getting reddish. You can also go darker with the shadow for black brows if you really want to make a statement.
  • BROWN OR DIRTY BLONDE HAIR: Go slightly darker or at least match it. Try Anastasia Brow Duo in Medium Ash/Medium Brown like I use on Lauren Conrad and Anna Paquin. Sweep the lighter shade all over the brows first then go back and draw individual brow strokes in upward motions with the brown shade.
  • RED HAIR: Match it if you’re a natural red head or go darker if you’re having a red moment. When Brittany Snow dyed her hair red for Pitch Perfect, I found it best to go darker with her brows. Try Anastasia Brow Powder in Auburn for the perfect red to brown ratio.
  • BLONDE HAIR: Go darker like I demonstrated .

How To Put Best Eye Liner on Eyes, Tips 2014

First of all, remove all kinds of oils from your eyes. After that you have applied the foundation, and the eye make-up is done, it is time to apply eye liner. Always apply eye liner after tall the eye shade made up, etc. Then, hold your pencil and start to apply the eye liner from the outer side of your eyes gently and smoothly. Do not hesitate or break your flow in your stroke because it will give a broken look of the liner. It is easy to apply brush strokes or up to curve design with the help of a pencil eye liner. Stand in front of the mirror with your chin held high. Keep the tip of the eye liner closer to your eyes as much as you can. If you are willing to apply a thick eye liner, first apply gentle thin eye liner. Then add layers going upwards gently according to your desire. If you are willing to apply gentle thin eye liner, never ever smudge your eyes with a sponge after you have applied the eye liner. If you want to give a smoky look to your eyes, in such a case, it is advisable to smudge your eye liner at the corners with upwards strokes.

While applying the eye liner to the lower lash line, you need to be more careful because it is often difficult to apply eye liner without breaks. With your chin down, and eye balls focused on the mirror, with properly shared eye liner, start to apply from the inner curve. Dark it repeatedly and meet the outer upper end and the lower end of the eye liner in order to give it a natural look. For fair skin, dark brown color thin eye line looks very pretty. Though on the darker skin tones, think a smudgy eye liner looks awesome.

Makeup Tips That Nobody Told You About

1.Blush For Your Face Type

In order to apply blush where it will be most flattering on you, first determine your face shape. Blush not only adds color, but also contours and defines your cheek bones. The way you apply your blush can accentuate your best features and also soften those that are perhaps too prominent.

2. Scotch Tape Eye Stencil

This unconventional beauty aid will help guide you when applying eye liner and shadows, especially if you’re going for a more daring look such as the “cat eye”. It will also help you achieve an even and balanced look for both eyes.

3. Disguising Under Eye Bags

Most of us tend to just sweep a layer of concealer to the entire under eye area, but to really conceal bags, it’s best to highlight the crease and then apply a darker shade to the actual puffy area.

4. Eye Highlights

The placement of highlights is very important when trying to create naturally beautiful eye makeup. Your lighter colors (whites, creams, and pearls) should be applied in the inner corners, the middle of the eye, and just under your brow bone. Apply your lightest colors first, and then move on to your darker shades.

5. Make The Best Of Your Eye Shape

As important as your color choices are, the placement of your shadows and liners is just as critical; you can create just about any illusion that you want. With careful placement, you can make your eyes appear wider, closer set, more prominent, deeper set, etc. Determine what shape of eyes you have, and then accentuate them accordingly.

6. Make Eyes Appear Bigger

If you don’t already own a white pencil, invest in one now just for this simple trick! Instead of lining your water line with dark eyeliner, use a white pencil to create the illusion of a bigger eye. If you squint your eyes a little at this picture comparison, you’ll see what a difference it really makes.

7. Tightlining

What is tightlining? It’s a way of applying your liner right in between your lashes. This is a great way to appear as though you’re not wearing any makeup at all, yet adding a little bit of color and definition to your eyes, and making the base of your lashes appear thicker.

8. The False Eyelash Look

False lashes can be a pain, not to mention time consuming! Here are a few ways to get the look without the hassle:
1. After curling your lashes, apply a thin layer of powder before applying your mascara. I just sweep a small blending brush across my compact and apply it to the top and bottom of my eyelashes. I’ve also heard that some people use baby powder, although I think they both have virtually the same effect; creating a base that makes them appear much fuller.
2. Apply two coats of mascara to the bottom and TOP side of your lashes, but wait 3-5 minutes in between each coat, otherwise they tend to get clumpy (not cute).
3. When applying your mascara, you don’t want to just move your mascara wand from the base of your lashes up. Make sure you are moving the mascara wand back and forth while going up. The left and right motion will make sure every lash is covered entirely, all the way to the tip.
4. Almost done! Now, check your lashes for any gaps. Use the tip of your wand to apply another coat of mascara to individual lashes where they look sparse. Even better, use a fine tipped liquid eyeliner to fine tune and fill in any gaps.

9. Secret Eye Lift

Sweep a light pink matte pencil across the entire length of your brow bone to create the illusion of a higher arch, and then blend, blend, blend! It should not be detectable.

10. Proper Contouring

When applied right, contouring can define your cheekbones and jaw line, reduce the look of a double chin, minimize a larger nose, and lift sagging eyes. It’s basically using makeup to highlight and accentuate your features. This is especially important for photos, as the camera tends to pick up shadows and highlights better than the naked eye.
There are actual contouring and highlighting powders made just for this, but you can also use a bronzer or powder that is a few shades darker than your skin, and a foundation that is a few shades lighter for highlighting. For the most part, your t-zone and under eye area is where you want to highlight, and the outer portion of your face, underneath your cheekbones, and your neck is where you want to define with a darker color. Keep in mind, blending is key for a natural look! This may take some practice at first.

11. The Line Saver

I’m always checking my eye makeup in the case that my eyeliner isn’t in it’s original place. Certain eyeliners are more prone to this, especially those that aren’t water proof, but I don’t like using waterproof makeup because it’s so darn hard to get off! I always feel like I’m ripping my lashes off in the removal process. To keep your liner behaving, sweep loose or pressed powder right under the eye liner on your bottom lid. It creates somewhat of a barrier, preventing your eyeliner from traveling downward.

12. The Lip Cheat

As it turns out, we weren’t all blessed with Angelina Jolie’s lush lips. Now, there are a few tricks to making them appear larger (a glossy lip being one), but for a more dramatic effect, don’t be afraid to line your lips just outside of your natural line. When I say just outside of your natural line, I mean slightly. You don’t want to look like a clown by over doing it!

13. Eyebrows & Face Shape

A lot of us ignore our eyebrows (or have over plucked them into non-existence) not realizing how important they are in defining our face. There isn’t one shape that is the best, it really just depends on your unique facial features and shape. Just like contouring, your eyebrow shape and thickness can help soften your face shape.

14. DIY Tinted Moisturizer

This works just as well as a B&B cream, hiding imperfections with a really natural look; simply mix your favorite facial moisturizer with a little bit of concealer. This way you can customize it with just the right amount of coverage.

15. Instant Eye Lift

This quick and easy illusion will give you an instant eye life. Draw an arch directly above your eyebrow with your favorite highlighter, and blend with your finger. This makes your arch look raised, making the whole eye area look like it’s been lifted.

16. Wash & Save Your Wands

Instead of tossing them in the trash when your mascara expires, wash and repurpose those wands! You can use them as an eyebrow brush, even applying a bit of color before sweeping across your brows. Or, spray with hairspray and use them to brush and keep your eyebrows in place.

17. Make It Last

Keep those lips kissable by sealing the deal. After your lipstick is applied, hold a tissue over your lips and apply powder over the tissue. This creates a matte look that lasts much longer.

Beauty Cheat Sheet: Find Your Best Eye Makeup Look for Any Season

imaxtree
imaxtree
If eyes are windows into the soul, it makes sense to pay them special attention when you're applying your daily (or nightly) face. You're no doubt aware that makeup trends, like fashion trends, aren't meant for everyone, so how do you make sure you've got the best shadow/liner combination for you? The looks that will really make your eyes pop, that will give you that alluring gaze whether you're at a board meeting or batting your eyelashes over a cocktail glass, are based on your specific eye color and shape. We've put together a primer for you to size up your gorgeous eyes (no matter their shape or position) with your color, to get the best possible effect.

The Shape of Things

Deep Set: For deep set eyes, the key is to brighten and open them up to show off their full potential. Make sure you've got concealer on hand to cover up not only the circles under your eyes but any other color inconsistencies surrounding your eyes, shadows, green spots, whatever they may be. Choose a light shadow that's just a bit lighter than your skin color (a touch of iridescence won't hurt either) and apply it from lid to brow bone, to create an open effect. Don't forget to apply the lighter shade to the inside corner of your eyes. A liquid highlighter can work to the same effect, just make sure you blend. When it comes to using eyeliner and darker colors, focus on the outside corners, and leave the inside natural looking.
Small: Follow the same brightening tricks for deep set eyes, but don't hesitate to line your top lid, creating an eye-opening effect. Use a waterproof mascara on the bottom to further open them up. Shimmery shadows reflect light, also creating the appearance of wide eyed beauty. Make sure you use highlighting shadow or liquid highlighter to accentuate and accent your brown bone. Perfectly groomed brows will maximize the space on which to highlight.
Heavy Lidded: You've got those bedroom eyes? You're the envy of many a woman. Make the best of it by getting those brows groomed, to maximize the visible space. Next, focus on the lower lid and lash line. Smudge brown liner for a natural focus that brings focus to the center of your eyes and balances your lids. Curled lashes will create a wider gaze, too, so don't forget to brush upward and onward with your mascara after you've crimped.
Downturned: If you've got eyes that turn down at the corners, no worries, you've got a built-in vulnerable look that tugs on heartstrings. Make it even better by applying a lighter color shadow from the center of your top eyelid to the inner corner. Then blend in a middle shade over your lids, stopping before it reaches your eyebrows. Use the darkest shade on the outer edges of your eyes. Make sure you've got it blended well!
Big Doe Eyes: You've already got an advantage in giving a truly arresting stare, beautiful makeup will only enhance it. Groom your brows, but keep a natural-looking thickness. Too thin, and you'll look off balance. Feel free to apply darker colors to your lids, and highlight your brow bone, you'll need dark liner around your waterline to really draw attention to your gorgeous irises.

Color Theory

Hazel Eyes: Hazel eyes have perhaps the most versatility with color. These blended irises often have flecks of gold, or blue or green, and are a motley mixup that allows you to play with a lot of color, including eyeliner options. Think about purple, green or gold for a night out. If you've got blue in those hazel eyes, consider a soft pink to brighten and accentuate them. Overall, pick out one color in your hazel and accent it with your makeup, as per below.
Blue: Blue, as a cool color, can look positively icy if paired with other cool colors. To add warmth and dimension to your gaze, try warm colors, earth tones and coppery shadows. Forest green, brown, even burnt orange can provide the perfect accent.
Brown: Dark eyes are the kind people simply get lost in. They give the impression of emotional depth and mystery. Nice, if you've got 'em! Really accentuate those dark shades with beautiful neutral colors that don't distract from your inborn power gaze. If you must use colors, do so sparingly.
Green: Green eyes really pop with plum and burgundy colors. Think of yourself in the purple family. If you've got deep brown eyes, go for cooler purples, if you're eyes are light, cool green, you'll want to go with darker shades of eggplant and mauve.
Amber: This rare shade looks gorgeous with neutrals, gold and copper metallics, green, purple…just about everything, except for silver and pastel shades. Stick to warm tones on the color wheel and you'll be sitting and looking pretty.
